Interventional Pain Specialist & Anaesthetist​

Dr Khor is an Australian trained medical practitioner.

He graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1986 and went on to do his specialist training in Anaesthesia in Wellington Hospital (NZ) where he developed an interest in pain management. He moved to Sydney in 1994 to complete his Anaesthesia fellowship training at The Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and was awarded the FANZCA in 1995. Dr Khor then took up the position of Staff Specialist in Anaesthesia and Pain Management at the Prince of Wales Hospital and subsequently became the Director of the Department of Pain Management in 1997 – a position he holds to this day. Dr Khor has been instrumental in transforming the Pain Management Department at Prince of Wales Hospital to a major Multidisciplinary Pain Centre in Australia.

Dr Khor is passionate about educating, training and mentoring the next generation of pain specialists and medical practitioners. The Prince of Wales Multidisciplinary Pain Centre has trained many young doctors from Australia and abroad to become pain medicine specialists. Dr Khor is also actively involved in undergraduate teaching on pain management at the Prince of Wales Clinical School, University of New South Wales. He holds the position of Conjoint Associate Professor with UNSW Medicine and Health.

Dr Khor is also an examiner for the:

  • Pain Medicine examination with the Faculty of Pain Medicine, ANZCA; 
  • Undergraduate Medicine Program with the University of NSW and
  • Postgraduate medicine programs both with UNSW and overseas universities.

 

For all his endeavours, Dr Khor remains indebted to his mentors: (the late) Dr Cressy Free and Dr Nanda Bellum from Wellington Hospital who first inspired him in the noble area of relieving pain and suffering; and Dr Matthew Crawford at the Prince of Wales Hospital who guided him in his early specialist career and continues to offer guidance. Dr Khor is very fortunate and blessed to be working with a dedicated team of professionals in the Department of Pain Management at the Prince of Wales Hospital and the Sydney Spine and Pain. His wife and boys who are the loves of his life continue to be his source of inspiration.

 

Consultation

Dr Khor consults privately in Suite 24, of the Sydney Spine and Pain at the Prince of Wales Private Hospital. He is also a Visiting Medical Officer at the Prince of Wales Private Hospital and Waratah Private Hospital in the speciality of Pain Management and Anaesthesia.

Research and Publications

In the midst of his busy clinical, teaching and administrative workload, Dr Khor works collaboratively with colleagues from diverse disciplines in clinical research of relevance to pain management.  He has published in areas of opioid therapy, drugs in pregnancy, ketamine, cannabinoids, multidisciplinary pain management and acute pain management.  His interest in opioid therapy has led him to publish the book, Opioid Therapy for Pain: A Practical Clinical Guide with his colleagues Professor Alex Sia and Dr Mary Cardosa.

Pain Management

Dr Khor believes in a patient centred approach and works to assist patients with severe pain through various state of the art techniques: 

  • using interventional procedures such as nerve blocks and spinal implants;
  • prescription of modern medicines; and
  • through working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team setting with clinical psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapist, rehabilitation physicians, psychiatrists, drug health physicians and surgeons.

Dr Khor’s main area of interest includes opioid analgesic therapy, management of complex acute postoperative pain, neuropathic pain, intractable cancer pain and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome in a multidisciplinary setting.
