His training was undertaken across major tertiary and quaternary hospitals, including Prince of Wales Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He was awarded fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) in 2019, and has since worked in mixed private and public practice.
Currently, Dr Carayannis divides his time between anaesthesia and pain medicine. He is involved in the clinical governance of the acute pain service at Campbelltown Public Hospital. He is passionate about medical education, process improvements and keeping up to date with latest techniques and knowledge.
His interest in pain medicine stems from his own personal experiences of acute and chronic pain. As such, he brings a level of empathy and understanding to those suffering from pain conditions, from his own lived experience. He has a deep passion for caring for patients with understanding and strives to help those under his care achieve an improved quality of life.
Dr Carayannis has special interests in neuralgic pain, degenerative back pain, cancer related pain, persistent post-surgical pain, and patients with pain who concurrently suffer from substance use disorders. He is up to date with the latest interventional techniques, medication therapy, and evidence base for pain management.
When Dr Carayannis is not working, he enjoys being outdoors, fishing, furniture restoration, and spending family time with his wife and son.
